Roll-Off Roof Observatories
Roll-Off Roof Observatories are designed so that the entire roof structure rolls away from the observatory, giving you and your telescopes a full view of the night sky. These structures are built onsite and can be made to blend into the environment or match the style of your house. A roll-off roof observatory does require extra room to hold the roof in the "off" position, but any heat gain from the day quickly escapes once the roof is off and yields a quick cool down time for your equipment. If you plan to observe with family or friends, the "all sky view" allows you to easily point out the wonders of the night sky. Because a roll-off roof observatory can be built to any size, it is the perfect choice for individuals with multiple scopes and organizations with stargazing outreach programs. And if you are doing astrophotography, you don't need any additional observatory control for slaving the telescope.
Durango Skies Roll-Off Roof Observatories

The options are almost endless. And choices you make in one area can affect how the observatory operates in another. Because of our experience in building roll-off roof observatories, Durango Skies can guide you through the options and point out the benefits, and potential pit falls, to different choices. And we can suggest designs you might not have thought of. The best part is that we have the tools to help you visual the finished roll-off roof observatory before it is built.

Foundation - The foundation on our roll-off roof observatories is either a wood deck or concrete slab. Our standard deck framework is built on concrete caissons and constructed from properly sized lumber, followed by a sub-floor of OSB sheets glued and nailed to the floor joists and finished with a pine board floor.
Walls, Windows & Doors - All walls are built with 2x4 construction followed by exterior sheathing. The customer has a choice on the style and type of siding. Choices range from real wood to engineered lap panels or stucco sheets. All doors are custom ordered to fit the wall height of the observatory. Windows are commercially available wood or vinyl styles with dual pane coated glass.
Roof System - Our roof system utilizes engineered trusses that roll on heavy duty v-groove rollers on an angle iron track. The roof trusses are designed to meet requirements, such as snow load, for your area. The number and load capacity of the roof rollers will vary depending on the size of the roof. Trusses are covered with roof sheathing, roof paper and steel roof panels in the color of your choice.
